Life in Sterling, VA
Sterling, Virginia is located on the eastern edge of Loudoun County and contains zip codes 20164, 20165, and 20166. Sterling started out as farmland but when construction began on Dulles International Airport in 1959, the town started to change quickly. The area that is today known as Sterling Park was developed by the Broyhill family. Their marketing plan was to sell homes for $3,000 less than what was available in neighboring Fairfax County. All of the homes would have air conditioning, something that was uncommon for the price range at the time. And homeowners would have access to golf, tennis, and pools.
Access to tennis courts and pools is a feature that you will still see today in many of Sterling’s communities!
Today, Sterling is home to many major employers, including Neustar, Electronic Instrumentation and Technology, and Northrup Grumman Innovation Systems. However, it is also a popular home base for those that commute to Fairfax or Washington D.C for work as it is right at the border of Loudoun and Fairfax counties and just 30 miles to Washington D.C.
Though a bustling suburban community, Sterling offers many options for nature lovers. The Potomac River runs along the northern border of sterling and offers fishing, hiking, and kayaking.
Sterling is also home to two major parks, Algonkian Regional Park and Claude Moore Park. Algonkian Regional Park offers a boat launch, 18-hole golf course, mini-golf, fishing, hiking trails, picnic areas, a playground, soccer fields, and a water park. Claude Moore Park offers hiking trails, fishing ponds, picnic pavilions, and baseball, softball, and rectangular fields. Claude Moore Park is also home to the Claude Moore Recreation Center which hosts state of the art fitness facilities, an indoor jogging track, an indoor competition pool, an indoor recreation pool with waterslide, a rock climbing wall, and a preschool!
Golf enthusiasts love the options close to home. In addition to the Algonkian Golf Course, Sterling is also home to Sterling Park Golf Club, 1757 Golf Club, and Trump National Golf Course. Whether you are looking for a public course or a private club, Sterling has your options covered!
