Life in Middleburg, VA
If you’re looking for a town that epitomizes the upscale horse and hunt character of Virginia, it would be Middleburg.
Virginia Statesman and Revolutionary War Lt. Colonel Levin Powell bought the land that makes up Middleburg for $2.50/acre in 1787. The seller was George Washington’s first cousin, Joseph Chinn, who had named the land “Chinn’s Crossroads.” Powel then went ahead and established the town, changing the name to “Middleburg” as it was located midway between Winchester and Alexandra on Route 50 (then called “Ashby Gap” trading route). Since that time, Middleburg has been a rest point for those traveling along Ashby Gap Road (Route 50).
Today Middleburg is a thriving town, proud of its natural beauty, Southern hospitality and its place in history with over 160 buildings named on the National Register of Historic Places. The area around the town is a gorgeous countryside, filled with stately horse farms surrounded by low stone walls. You will often see cattle grazing in the fields with the Bull Run and Blue Ridge mountain ranges in the distance. Middleburg is blessed with an ideal grape growing climate, so there are now 20 wineries within a half hour drive of this historic town, which makes Middleburg among the top 10 wine destinations worldwide.
Only an hour’s drive from Washington DC, Middleburg is the perfect place to live for those wanting the ultimate in country life, while still enjoying the amenities offered in an urban city.
