Fairfax, VA was formed in the early 1800s as the Town of Providence and is located in the center of Fairfax County. It was originally a large farm town mostly populated by farmers who resettled in the area after leaving Virginia’s Tidewater region. With a rich history going all the way back to the Civil War, the town was renamed “Town of Fairfax” in 1874. It wasn’t until 1961 that Fairfax was incorporated as its own city, separate from the county.
Fairfax is now a thriving hub of quaint residential communities, commercial areas, and schools. George Mason University, the largest public research university in the state, is located downtown, along with a government center. Fairfax offers residents educational and economic facilities as well as a broad range of arts and culture that include annual celebrations, festivals, and performances.
