Life in McLean, VA

McLean is located in Fairfax County, VA just 10 miles from Washington, DC and is among Northern Virginia’s most desirable neighborhoods for wealthy professionals. The town has a rich history that goes back nearly 4 centuries. This was when the 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron owned the Northern Neck Proprietary, a huge Virginia land grant that included the land McLean is now situated on. One of the most famous estates built on the land was named “Salona” and takes up a portion of the 2,862-acre Langley land grant.

The owner of the estate during the war of 1812 was the Reverend William Maffit and he gave President James Madison refuge at Salona while British troops were burning Washington DC. Union General William Smith (“Baldy”) made Salona his headquarters during the Civil War. The estate continued to be a working farm until the current owners started selling acreage in the late 1940s. State Representative Clive DuVal and his wife Susan started buying parcels of Salona in 1953. Later, in a very generous gesture, the DuVal family arranged for the house and property to be preserved.

Most residents agree that the expense of living in McLean is more than worth the price when everything is taken into consideration. McLean is in an outstanding school district and this is a very safe and quiet community. On nice days, you will often find children outside playing. The neighborhood has beautiful parks, places to set up for picnics, and for hiking and biking. Since McLean, VA now has its own Metro stop, residents can quickly take the train to DC for business or entertainment, making McLean a great choice if you want to get the most out of life.
